Hempseed cake, a byproduct of hempseed oil production, is a highly nutritious alternative feed source for cattle, according to a study by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), which was conducted alongside North Dakota State University (NDSU).
Cattle fed hempseed retained “very low levels” of cannabinoids in muscle, liver, kidney and fat tissues, the USDA said. Hemp product manufacturers and farmers are seeking the right to feed farm animals the byproduct, but some states have raised concerns over the potential of cannabinoids from the animals to transfer to humans.
The study found that the concentrations of cannabinoid in meat products contributed only a small part of what was considered safe.
